You can’t really come to Morella and ignore the castle.

Built high on the natural rock above Morella, the fortress has occupied an extraordinarily strategic position for centuries.
The climb takes you gradually higher above the medieval town until the streets and surrounding mountains open beneath you.
And then you reach the views.
This is the reward.
Morella below.

And an enormous landscape stretching into the distance.
Take your time on the way up.
And wear comfortable shoes.
🏘️ Walk Through the Medieval Old Town
Don’t treat the streets between attractions as simply a way of getting somewhere.
They’re one of the best parts of Morella.
Walk beneath stone arches.
Explore narrow streets.
Pass historic houses and small squares.
Look into traditional shops.
Stop when something catches your attention.
Morella isn’t a place we’d explore with our eyes permanently fixed on Google Maps.
Sometimes the interesting street is the one you weren’t planning to take.

Morella’s defensive walls are one of the features that make the town so visually impressive.
They wrap around the historic centre, interrupted by monumental gateways that once controlled access to the town.
Walk alongside sections of the walls and look back towards the surrounding landscape.
They aren’t simply something Morella preserved for tourists.
They’re part of what created the town you see today.
And they’re fantastic for photographs.
⛪ Step Inside the Basilica
Morella isn’t only about its castle.
The Basílica Arciprestal de Santa María la Mayor is one of the town’s most important historic buildings and deserves a stop if architecture and history interest you.
Its Gothic character feels completely at home among Morella’s medieval streets.
Even if churches aren’t normally the focus of your trips, this is one we’d consider seeing.

Some of the best views of Morella aren’t necessarily from inside Morella.
They’re of Morella.
The town’s position makes the entire skyline spectacular from the surrounding landscape.
