If you visit one place in Alicante, make it this one.
Castillo de Santa Bárbara dominates the city from Mount Benacantil and gives you some of the most impressive views in Alicante.
From above, the city opens beneath you: rooftops, marina, beaches and the Mediterranean stretching towards the horizon.
But the castle isn’t only about the view.
Its fortifications tell centuries of Alicante’s history, while its position explains immediately why this mountain has been so strategically important.
Our tip: Don’t spend the entire visit looking through your phone camera. Find a viewpoint, put the phone away for a minute and actually look.
🏘️ Wander Through Alicante’s Old Town
Come back down from the castle and don’t immediately head towards the beach.
Explore first.
The historic quarter beneath Santa Bárbara is full of narrow streets, small plazas, cafés and colourful houses.
One of the most photogenic areas is Santa Cruz, climbing up the hillside beneath the castle.
Whitewashed houses, colourful doors, flowers and steep little streets make this part of Alicante feel completely removed from the modern waterfront below.
This is where we’d deliberately allow ourselves to get slightly lost.
🌴 Walk the Explanada de España
Eventually, make your way towards the sea.
Alicante’s Explanada de España is one of the city’s signatures – a long promenade lined with palm trees running parallel to the waterfront.
Walk slowly.
Grab a coffee.
Watch the marina.
Sit beneath the palms for a while.
Not every part of a day trip needs to be an attraction.
Sometimes the point is simply enjoying where you are.

The waterfront is where Alicante changes character again.
After castles and narrow Old Town streets, suddenly everything opens towards the Mediterranean.
Walk around the marina, stop for a drink or simply enjoy the sea views before deciding what to do next.
And because you’re travelling privately, there’s no bus timetable telling you when you have to leave.
🍽️ Make Lunch Part of the Day
Don’t treat lunch as something you need to squeeze between attractions.
Alicante has a strong rice and seafood culture of its own, so this is a good opportunity to sit down properly and enjoy the Mediterranean side of the city.

And if it’s 4pm, the sun is shining and you’ve seen enough?
Go to the beach.
