Cartuja de Valldecrist

A short journey brings us to one of the most atmospheric places of the day — the Cartuja de Valldecrist near Altura.

Founded in the 14th century, this Carthusian monastery became one of the important religious institutions of the historic Kingdom of Valencia.

Today its remains stand quietly beneath the mountains.

Walking through the former monastery offers a glimpse into a very different world — one shaped by prayer, silence and monastic life.

Valldecrist is also one of the recognised places connected to the modern Ruta del Grial pilgrimage itinerary through the Valencian Community.

Lunch in Segorbe or Altura

Around midday we stop for a relaxed lunch in the local area.

Choose your own restaurant and meal, or ask us for recommendations for traditional local cuisine.

There is no fixed tourist menu and no rush.

Lunch is paid directly at the restaurant, allowing you to choose exactly what you would like.

Cueva Santa – The Highlight of the Pilgrimage

The final major destination is the extraordinary Santuario de la Cueva Santa, high in the mountains near Altura.

For centuries, pilgrims have travelled to this sacred place.

Unlike an ordinary church, the sanctuary lies inside a natural cave. Visitors descend beneath the rock to reach the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Cave – Virgen de la Cueva Santa.

The atmosphere changes immediately as you enter.

Stone walls, silence and the underground chapel create one of the most unusual religious settings in the Valencia region.

Cueva Santa is officially included among the sacred places of Valencia’s Holy Grail Route, connecting this mountain sanctuary with the wider pilgrimage journey towards Valencia.

After visiting Cueva Santa, we begin our scenic journey back to Valencia.

Following the Holy Grail Route

The Ruta del Grial is an established pilgrimage and cultural route crossing the Valencian Community towards Valencia Cathedral.

Its journey passes through historic towns and sacred places including Altura and Segorbe.

Among the official points of interest on this part of the route are:

The complete pilgrimage ultimately reaches Valencia Cathedral, where the Holy Chalice – Santo Cáliz – is preserved.
