What You Can Experience
🏰 Explore the Castle of Papa Luna
Start at the top.
Peñíscola’s castle dominates the entire town and is impossible to ignore.
The fortress was built by the Templars and later became the residence of Benedict XIII – Papa Luna, one of the most fascinating figures connected with Peñíscola’s history. Inside are spaces including the courtyard, papal rooms and other parts of the medieval fortress.
But even if medieval history isn’t normally your thing, there’s another reason to climb up here.
The views.
From the fortress, the Mediterranean surrounds you while the beaches, rooftops and coastline stretch into the distance.
This is where you understand why Peñíscola was built where it was.
🏘️ Get Lost in the Old Town
Don’t rush back down after visiting the castle.
Peñíscola’s Old Town is part of the experience.
Walk through steep, narrow streets between whitewashed houses. Pass beneath historic gateways. Find tiny shops, terraces, colourful balconies and unexpected openings towards the Mediterranean. The old fortifications include historic entrances such as Portal Fosc and Portal de Sant Pere.
Put Google Maps away for twenty minutes.
Take whichever street looks interesting.
If it goes uphill, follow it.
If it ends at the sea, even better.
🐚 Find Casa de las Conchas
While exploring the Old Town, look for one of Peñíscola’s most unusual houses.
Casa de las Conchas is exactly what the name suggests – a house whose façade is covered with seashells.
According to Peñíscola’s official tourism information, local residents began decorating the façade with shells in the 1950s; today it has become one of the Old Town’s characteristic stops.
It’s a quick stop.
But definitely worth finding.
🌊 Listen to El Bufador
There’s another surprise hidden beneath the Old Town.
El Bufador is a natural opening in the rock connecting with the sea below.
When conditions are rough, seawater and air are forced through the opening, creating the dramatic sound that gives the place its name.
On a calm day it may look much less spectacular.
That’s nature.
But it’s still worth seeing while you’re exploring the historic centre.
🎬 Walk Through Game of Thrones Locations
Does Peñíscola look slightly cinematic?
There’s a reason.
The town has been used as a filming location for numerous productions, including Game of Thrones, and the official tourism office has created a dedicated film route through 14 locations around Peñíscola.
Even if you’re not a fan of the series, it’s easy to understand why filmmakers came here.
Medieval walls.
Narrow streets.
Fortress towers.
And the Mediterranean behind everything.
They didn’t need to build much of a set.
⚓ Walk Down to the Fishing Port
After exploring the heights of the Old Town, head back towards sea level.
Peñíscola’s port combines fishing and recreational boats and sits directly beneath the castle and historic centre.
This is a good moment to slow the day down.
Walk beside the harbour.
Look back towards the castle.
And start thinking about lunch.
🍽️ Make Lunch Part of the Experience
Don’t come all the way to Peñíscola and eat something quickly because you have another attraction scheduled.
You’re beside the Mediterranean.
Take your time.
Look for fish, seafood, rice dishes and local Mediterranean cooking.
Find somewhere you like rather than somewhere that’s simply closest.
And because you’re travelling privately…
Nobody in your group needs to drive back to Valencia.
Have the wine.
Enjoy lunch.
The castle isn’t going anywhere.
🏖️ Finish the Day on Playa Norte
This is one of my favourite ways to structure Peñíscola.
History first. Beach later.
Playa Norte begins beneath the castle and extends for around 5.5 kilometres along the coast. What makes it special isn’t simply the sand – it’s looking back from the beach and seeing the entire historic town and castle rising above the Mediterranean.
So after several hours of cobbled streets and castle stairs…
Take your shoes off.
Go for a swim.
Find somewhere for a drink.
You’ve earned the beach.
🌿 Want More Nature? Discover Sierra de Irta
If you’ve already visited Peñíscola before – or nature is more important to you than beach time – there’s another option.
South of the town lies Sierra de Irta Natural Park, adding a much wilder coastal landscape of mountains and coves to the Peñíscola area. Official tourism information includes dedicated routes through the natural park.
This isn’t something we’d automatically squeeze into every Peñíscola day.
But if nature is your priority, tell us before the trip and we can discuss how to structure the day.
