At first, Alcalá del Júcar looks almost impossible.
White houses climb from the river towards a castle sitting high above the valley. Streets disappear into the hillside, and the Río Júcar curves around the village below.

A Village Built Into the Mountain
Alcalá del Júcar is best discovered from the bottom up.
Start beside the river and cross the old stone bridge known locally as the Puente Romano. From here, the streets begin climbing between tightly packed white houses towards the castle above.
There are small squares, viewpoints and plenty of corners where you’ll probably stop simply because the view has changed again.
But what makes Alcalá really different is what’s hidden behind the white façades.
Many of its traditional houses were excavated directly into the limestone mountain.
Walk into what appears to be a normal house and you can find rooms, passages and tunnels extending deep into the rock — sometimes all the way through to the other side of the mountain.

Keep Going Up
Eventually, the streets lead towards the Castle of Alcalá del Júcar, standing above the village since the medieval period.
The climb takes a little effort.
It’s worth it.
From above, you finally understand the landscape you’ve been walking through — the river curling around the bottom of the gorge, white houses covering the hillside and the rocky walls of the Júcar valley stretching beyond the village.
There’s no need to hurry back down.

The Río Júcar has carved a dramatic gorge through the limestone, creating the Hoz del Júcar that surrounds Alcalá.
Seeing the village from outside the historic centre puts everything into perspective: the river below, the steep cliffs and the tiny white houses built into the hillside.
It’s a good final look at the place before we start the journey home.

Before You Book
There’s one thing you should know about Alcalá del Júcar:
it goes up.
The village is built into a steep hillside, so exploring it properly means slopes, steps, cobbled streets and some uneven surfaces.
You don’t need to be particularly fit, but comfortable shoes will make the day much more enjoyable.
If someone in your group has limited mobility, tell us before booking and we’ll discuss what can realistically be adapted.
And if you’re visiting during the warmer months, bringing swimwear and a towel isn’t a bad idea. The river can be very tempting after walking up and down Alcalá.
