Bocairent’s historic centre is best explored on foot.

The streets are steep, narrow and sometimes surprisingly confusing. Houses seem to sit on top of one another, and because the town follows the hillside, you can enter one building from completely different levels depending on which street you’re standing on.

There are stone steps, small squares, fountains and viewpoints hidden between the houses.

Then Comes the Part You Probably Won’t Forget

Just outside the historic centre are the Covetes dels Moros.

From a distance, they look like dozens of small windows cut into a vertical cliff.

Once you get closer, you realise they’re actually entrances to a network of chambers carved into the rock around a thousand years ago.

And you can go inside.

This isn’t a normal cave visit with wide paths and railings.

You’ll move between small chambers through narrow openings. In places, you’ll need to crouch, use your hands and knees, and squeeze through passages in the rock.

It’s part history, part small adventure.

One Important Thing Before You Go Inside

The Covetes aren’t suitable for everyone.

The spaces are narrow, some sections require crawling, and there are areas that may be uncomfortable for anyone with claustrophobia, vertigo or mobility problems.

Closed, secure footwear is essential.

If someone in your group would prefer not to enter, that’s absolutely fine. Bocairent still has plenty to enjoy, and we can adapt the visit around the historic centre and viewpoints.

The important thing is to tell us before the trip if anyone in your group has mobility concerns.

A Place That Stored Winter for Summer

Close to the old town is another example of how Bocairent used the mountain differently.

The Cava de Sant Blai was once used to store snow and ice collected during winter.

Long before refrigerators existed, that snow was packed inside deep underground chambers and preserved for use during the warmer months.

It’s a small stop, but one that makes the history of the town suddenly feel very practical.

Take Time for Lunch

After climbing through Bocairent and crawling through the Covetes, you’ll probably be ready to sit down.

Choose a restaurant in town and enjoy a proper lunch.

Try something local if you want to. Have dessert. Have another coffee.

There’s no large tour group waiting outside and no need to rush through your meal.

Lunch isn’t included, so you’re free to choose where and what you’d like to eat.

What About the Bullring and Monastery?

Bocairent has more to see if you still have the energy.

Its historic bullring is unusual because much of it was excavated directly into the rock, while the Monasterio Rupestre hides another remarkable series of spaces carved beneath the town.

We don’t force these into every itinerary.

If you’d like to visit them and schedules allow, they can be added to your day.

Otherwise, use the extra time to keep exploring the old town, stop for a drink or simply enjoy the views before heading back to Valencia.
