The fortress uses the natural shape of the mountain itself, rising above the town at more than 1,000 metres above sea level.

Getting there takes some effort.

There are uphill paths, stairs and more than a few moments when you’ll probably stop to catch your breath.

That’s fine.

The higher you climb, the better the view becomes.

Unfortunately, it makes you do the climbing first.

Expect uphill streets, steps and uneven surfaces, especially on the way to the castle.

Comfortable shoes are important.

Morella is also much higher than Valencia, so temperatures can be noticeably cooler, particularly outside summer. An extra layer is often a good idea.

Castle access can also be affected by severe weather conditions.
