Wander Through the Old Town

Peñíscola rewards a little wandering.

Follow the streets uphill towards the castle, passing white houses, small shops and terraces tucked into the historic centre. Pause at the shell-covered Casa de las Conchas. Take the turning that promises a sea view.

Your Pocket Guide gives the walk a clear direction, but you don’t have to follow every stop in order.

Found somewhere you’d like to linger? Stay a little longer.

Step Inside the Castle — Admission Included

At the top of the Old Town, the castle brings Peñíscola’s story into focus.

The Knights Templar built this fortress. Later, it became the stronghold of Benedict XIII, better known as Papa Luna, one of the rival popes of the Western Schism.

As recognition of his claim dwindled, he continued his papal court here, above the Mediterranean.

Walk through the fortress’s rooms and courtyards, discover its connection with Papa Luna and make your way to the terraces for views over the rooftops and sea.

This is the visit at the heart of your day.

We’ll plan around the castle’s opening hours, which vary by season.

Make Time for a Proper Lunch

After the castle and the uphill streets, a table in the shade can feel like the best stop of all.

Choose a restaurant in the Old Town or head down towards the waterfront. Peñíscola offers plenty of opportunities for fish, seafood and rice dishes — but where and what you eat is entirely up to you.

There’s time for lunch within your agreed day-trip schedule, without having a set menu chosen for you.

Lunch is not included, giving you the freedom to choose something that suits your taste and budget.

A Harbour Walk — or a Little Beach Time

After lunch, see Peñíscola from another angle.

Walk down towards the harbour, where the narrow streets give way to boats, open skies and views back towards the fortress.

Or head towards the beach.

On a warm day, bring your swimwear and a towel. You can use some of your free time for a swim or simply sit beside the Mediterranean before the journey home.

Outside beach weather, the promenade still makes a lovely place for a final walk or coffee.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

Is there a guide walking with us?

You’ll have a professional driver for the journey and our interactive Pocket Guide for sightseeing.

The Old Town and castle visit are self-guided, so you can explore at your own pace. A human walking guide is not included in this package.

How much walking is involved?

The Old Town sits on a hill, with uphill streets, cobbled surfaces and some steps, particularly around the castle.

Comfortable shoes will make the visit more enjoyable. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, contact us before booking so we can discuss what can be adapted.

What should we bring?

Bring a charged smartphone, comfortable shoes and sun protection. Headphones are useful for listening to the audio stories, and a power bank can come in handy.

In warm weather, add swimwear and a towel if you’d like some beach time.

Can we choose how to spend our free time?

Yes. Follow the suggested walking route, spend longer over lunch or leave time for the beach.

We’ll agree the day’s schedule and return arrangements so you know how much time you have to enjoy Peñíscola.
